cc-tapis is a contemporary rug company based in Milan. It combines an ancient technique, hand-knotting, with the work of designers, artists and fashion brands, in collections that sit between design, fashion and art.
From France to Milan
The company was founded in France by Nelcya Chamszadeh and Fabrizio Cantoni, who for more than twenty years produced hand-knotted rugs in Nepal. In 2011 cc-tapis moved to Milan, where a team of designers led by the art director and partner Daniele Lora renews traditional methods with a fresh approach.
How a rug is made
Most collections are made by hand in the company's ateliers in Nepal, Thailand and India, with raw materials such as Himalayan wool, pure silk and linen. On a vertical loom, every knot is tied by hand: a single rug can have up to 232,000 knots per square metre. Smaller productions are made in Italy, also experimenting with technologies such as robotufting, tufting with a robotic arm.
Designers and custom projects
The catalogue includes rugs designed with many creatives and brands, a model that lets the company constantly explore new aesthetics and techniques. Over the years cc-tapis has also built strong expertise in custom rugs for homes, shops, hotels and offices, with clients such as La Rinascente, Cartier and the LVMH group, and a growing focus on the sustainability of materials.
